Sleeping in an airport: what actually works, from benches to sleep pods

Gate info

An overnight layover does not have to mean a sleepless night in a plastic chair, but the comfortable options are not always obvious from the departures board.

Benches and gate areas

Armrest-free bench seating exists in many terminals specifically for lying down, and tends to cluster in quieter zones away from the busiest gates. Arriving early to claim one before a late-night rush fills the area is worth the effort.

Dedicated rest zones and sleep pods

A growing number of larger airports offer small private sleep pods or quiet lounges built specifically for resting between flights, separate from ordinary waiting areas and considerably quieter.

Picking a spot strategically

Areas near moving walkways, main thoroughfares, or overnight cleaning routes tend to stay noisy and brightly lit all night. A spot one or two gates off the main path is usually calmer without losing proximity to your next flight.

Questions people ask

Q02

Keeping valuables on or attached to your body, rather than loose beside you, is the standard precaution most frequent overnight travelers follow.
